Gay J. Hartley Engelhaupt

Gay J. Hartley Engelhaupt, 86, of Madison, Alabama passed away July 11, 2026.

Gay was born in Kansas City, MO on June 23, 1940. Her mother, Dorothy Hartley, died when she was 5 years old, and her grandparents O.C. and Anna Hartley helped raise her. She lived in Kansas City, Kissimmee, FL., Grand Island, N.Y., and Madison, AL. She worked most recently teaching ceramics at the Madison Senior Center, where her creativity and fun-loving personality could shine.

She is survived by her spouse Darell Engelhaupt, known as “Jerry”, and her daughter, Erika Engelhaupt of Knoxville, TN. Gay has 3 grandchildren, Brandon Colgan, Tyler Colgan and Austin Colgan from her son David Smith. She is also survived by her sister, Janice Elaine Cotton and brother, Edwin W. Hartley, Jr., known as “Dunner”.

Gay is preceded in death by both of her parents, Edwin W. Hartley, Sr. and Dorothy L. Hartley. As well as her son David B. Smith.

The funeral service for Gay J. Hartley Engelhaupt will take place Monday, July 20, 2026 at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory in Madison, AL. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM and the service will follow at 1:00 PM with Dr. Alan Weatherly officiating.
