Robert Jesse Canten, lovingly known as “Bob” to his friends and “Bobby” to his family, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on October 18, 1944, in Indiana to Robert Joseph Canten and Rosemary Campbell Canten.

Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Jeanette Canten; his children Lisa Rene Sandwell, (Norman) of Houston, Robert Michael Canten, (Michelle) of Corinth, Mississippi; Sherri Denise Justice of Madison, Alabama. He also leaves his eight grandchildren: Austin Sandwell (Maddie), Allie Sandwell, Aubri Sandwell, Lauren Canten Williams (Alex), Jake Justice (Posey), Will Justice (Brooklyn), Robby Canten, and Noah Canten. He is also survived by several beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bettie Bligh Canten; his parents, Robert Joseph and Rosemary Campbell Canten; his brothers, Jack Canten (Patty) and Tom Canten (Belinda); and his sister, Sharon Colburn (Jack).

Bob served in the army and was a veteran of the Vietnam war.

Bob devoted his career to transportation management before retiring. He was also a faithful member of Madison Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years. Prior to Madison Baptist, he was a member of West Highland Baptist Church in Athens. He had a heart for young people and found great fulfillment teaching youth Sunday School. His steadfast faith guided his life and was reflected in the kindness, humility, and service he showed to others.

Bob and Jeanette built a life rooted in faith, family, and love. Together they created countless cherished memories and were a source of strength and support for one another through every season of life.

Nothing brought Bob greater happiness than spending time with his grandchildren. They were the light of his life, and he cherished every opportunity to encourage them, laugh with them, and watch them grow.

Bob enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He rarely missed a NASCAR race or any kind of motorsports event, and he was a loyal Alabama football fan who looked forward to cheering on the Crimson Tide each season. Bob also enjoyed reading his Bible and watching old westerns.

More than anything, Bob will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His quiet strength, unwavering faith, generous spirit, and deep love for his family leave a lasting legacy that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing he is at peace and reunited with those who went before him. His life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and his love was a gift that will never be forgotten.
